Site DescriptionBarnard Castle – known as “Barney” to the locals – is the nearest town to this lovely Site. It is peaceful, yet close to many attractions and the industrial centres of the north east. A haven for walkers and cyclists.

Barnard Castle

The town of Barnard Castle hosts the Teesdale Thrash on the early Bank Holiday – a traditional extravaganza of folk song, dance and morris men. On the second Bank Holiday, the Club Site hosts a Meet with parades, fun fair, steam rally and other side shows. June sees the Appleby Horse Fair, when hundreds converge on the town. Horses are ridden – bareback – to the river, where they are washed ready for sale. Deepdale 4x4 Off Road Centre gives the opportunity to try clay pigeon shooting or pony trekking as well as taking a vehicle to the highest pub in England for a meal. Visit a leadmine at Killhope. Situated in an old chapel, Bowlees Visitor Centre is just across the road from one of the most attractive sections of the Pennine Way. The Pennine Way itself is 270 miles long and one of the longest of many walks and cycle paths in the area. Built in 1892 as a public art gallery, the Bowes Museum also hosts exhibitions, demonstrations, craft fairs and an open air theatre. Eggleston Hall Gardens are four and a half acres of surprises, winding paths, borders, organic vegetables, walls and fell views.
