Site DescriptionOur Site at Devizes was planted with a Club Centenary Wood four years ago. The trees are now flourishing at this lovely Site on the Kennet and Avon Canal and it has been awarded a Silver in the David Bellamy Conservation Awards scheme. The surrounding countryside includes some of the country’s most significant prehistoric sites.

You can walk to Devizes along the refurbished canal towpath, passing the 29 locks in the Caen Hill flight. The Devizes Lock Heritage Trail leaflet gives more information about the canal. Devizes – four miles from Site – is a pretty market town.The town museum boasts one of the finest prehistoric collections in Europe. Buses to the town stop near the Site. Wadworth Brewery still uses horse-drawn drays for deliveries round the town. The stables are open to visitors most afternoons. To the west is Melksham. It has a good shopping centre and a nature reserve where kingfishers and kestrels are regularly seen The beautiful Georgian city of Bath is also accessible by bus. Here you can wander round the World Heritage Site. Visit the Roman Baths, the Pump Room, the Carriage Museum and the museum of costumes in the Assembly Rooms. The prehistoric sites of Avebury, Silbury Hill and West Kennet Long Barrow are to the north. Stonehenge is near Amesbury. The Neolithic ceremonial monument of Woodhenge is also nearby and worth a visit. To the north of the site is Bowood House. There is an adventure playground for children as well as the tranquillity of Capability Brown’s Great Park. The Rhododendron Walks are spectacular in the spring. Solve the riddle of King Arthur's Mirror Maze and enjoy the famous lions in the Safari Park at Longleat, home to the 7th Marquess of Bath. The village of Lacock has hardly changed since mediaeval times. The Abbey is open to visitors and the Fox Talbot Museum tells the history of photography. Travel south to the B3098 to Westbury Hill to see the oldest white horse in Wiltshire. It lies immediately below the Iron Age hillfort of Bratton Camp. There is a pub near the Site entrance serving good food.
