The town of Folkestone has a cobbled High Street, working harbour, promenade and a good selection of places to eat. Folkestone Warren – home to the Club Site – is a Local Nature Reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest with nature trails and family activities throughout the year. Day trips to France are available by ferry or train. The area’s history during the Second World War is marked at the Battle of Britain Memorial at Capel-le-Ferne and the Kent Battle of Britain Museum at Hawkinge. Howletts Wild Animal Park is home to the UK’s largest family of elephants and includes a Walk with Lemurs feature. Walk the five miles into Dover using the footpath from the Site. Dover Castle dates back to Roman times and also holds the tunnels used by Churchill in the planning of the Dunkirk evacuation in 1940. The world’s smallest public railway runs from Hythe to Dungerness. Inland are the Cinque Ports of Kent and the mediaeval town of Cranbrook with a working windmill. Capel-le-Ferne’s local Tuesday Farmers Market is winner of the Best Farmers Market in Kent competition.
