Haltwhistle

Haltwhistle town is full of history. Examples include the 12th century church, a peletower – now a hotel – and five other Bastle Houses (defensible houses) from its Border Reiving past. The outdoor swimming pool in Haltwhistle is popular with families. The Abbey at Hexham is on a site which has been home to a church since AD674. Hadrian’s Wall is only four miles from Site. A bus travels the length of the wall (73 miles) in the summer. The Roman Army Museum at Vindolanda is beside one of the best preserved sections of the wall. Archaeologists are still excavating the remains around the Roman fort. Alston is to the south. It is the highest market town in England. The South Tyne Trail is part of the National Cycle Network and is around half a mile from Site. Cragside, a National Trust property, was the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. The MetroCentre in Gateshead is the largest shopping and leisure centre in Europe, easily reached by car or train from Haltwhistle. Fishing is possible in the River Tyne from the Site, for those with a rod licence.
