Site DescriptionOur Hertford Site is a great base for exploring the Hertfordshire countryside and taking the train into London. It is on the outskirts of the town, next to the university campus at Balls Park. Surrounded by parkland, it has two large camping fields, a tent field and a children’s playing field.

The county town of Hertford is less than a mile away. There you will find the confluence of four rivers, a fascinating local museum, good shopping facilities and many places to eat. The town hosts a Fun Day in June and a Christmas Dickensian Night in November. Swimmers can enjoy the facilities at Hertford or Broxbourne. Children and the more adventurous will love the wave machine at the latter. Hertford East railway station, a 20 minute walk away, is ideal for getting into London’s Liverpool Street. You can buy a cheap ticket after 9am which covers rail, underground and bus travel. Trains run every half-an-hour. Waltham Abbey is a town of contrasts, with a church dating back to the 12th century and an Art Nouveau Town Hall. The Epping Forest District Museum holds “historical happenings” throughout the year. Claiming to be “Britain’s friendliest zoo”, Paradise Wildlife Park is home to snow leopards, the Lost Temple Reptiles and the Parrot Olympics Training Camp. Whitewebbs Museum of Transport is based in a Victorian pumping station and holds many vehicles, from a 1906 Riley Tricar to a 1971 Ford Capri. Follow in the footsteps of Queen Elizabeth I, Charles Dickens and the Rolling Stones by visiting Knebworth. Children will enjoy Fort Knebworth, an adventure playground with a four-lane astroglide and miniature railway. The celebrated Jacobean house at Hatfield is also worth a trip. Walkers and cyclists can follow the River Lee through the Lee Valley Regional Park. Rye Meads nature reserve is also part of the Lee Valley, which is over 50km long and includes lakes, waterways, green open spaces and areas of woodland. The Roman city of St Albans – Verulamium – is worth exploring. The beautiful cathedral is dedicated to St Alban, the first British martyr.

Comment: Beautiful spot, great facilities, quiet, family orientated. Could only stay one night ... next time it will be longer!
