Comment: Over the last dozen or so years I have watched Boot and Eskdale transform from a small backwater retreat that I visited often, all year round, specifically for its tranquility and sense of 'off the beaten track' into the tourism goldmine that it is today. Hollins used to be a backpacker/walkers site with basic yet homely amenities within a stones throw of two typical Lakeland pubs and a few feet from some of Lakelands best walking. Eskdale not being easily accessible by road, I believe it was in my fourth or fifth year of camping at Hollins when I saw my first caravan there; the drive over 'the passes' is worth it alone. The whole valley in general is now quite commercialised yet hides it very well and now seems to be geared up to attract the young proffessional and his family in order to give him a 'countrified' feeling with a safety net. Despite this pitch fees at Hollins are still reasonable and Jim and Rosie Bogg still give their unique welcome. It's a crying shame though that they no longer open all year round.
